Church Unity – Can’t We All Just Get Along?

Last week I read a blog on the subject of church membership in whether it was biblical or not.   The writer did a good job laying out the benefits. I scrolled down to leave my comment when I stumbled across another blogger’s comment.  He was ruthless.

WRITER BASHING. The commenter slammed the blog writer up one side and down another challenging him on his interpretation of the scripture.  It was really sad and it embarrassed me to be a believer and witness another so called Christian assassinate the  character of his brother.

TO COMMENT OR NOT TO COMMENT. I read numerous blogs everyday, and not all do I bother to comment on, but I felt a need to let the author know that I thought he did an excellent job proving the case for membership.

The author’s entire blog post had a single scripture to prove his case  in that membership was biblical.  Yes, the author could have used any number of other scriptures to prove his case.  But did he deserve to be demeaned? NO.

SOUND THE ALARMS – WHERE’S THE CHURCH? In the wake of the shooting sprees in Colorado, Wisconsin, Arizona, Chicago, the alarms are sounding that  the church has lots of work to do – your church, my church, our church, the church down the road – ALL churches who witness Jesus as Lord.  The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few!

Folks, we do NOT have to argue over the petty things. That one scripture did NOT discredit all the other good stuff that was written.

We must be the light to a dark and depressed world.  How futile it is to spend time online showing us how smart you are as you gloat as being the self-appointed scripture watch dog.  Shame on you!  You know my position, “If the shoe fits…”

IS IT ABOUT HIM OR YOU? If the commenter had a heart for the kingdom, he could have comment on the subject at hand and added “I would have used this scripture to prove the point.” His backlash instead displayed his motivation in glorifying himself by demeaning the blog writer.

MY FLESH WANTED TO REACH OUT AND TOUCH. I must admit, I wanted that commenter more than a horse wanted hay.  Had I  been able to comment I would have certainly wrote out of my flesh. In hindsight I am grateful that I was unable to comment lest I had said some things and blown my own witness.

There are just softer ways to address people.  We need to be sensitive.  Let’s concentrate on the things that UNITE us and stop trying to prove to others that we are so much better than they are.

WHAT ABOUT THE DENOMINATION DEBATES?  You know what I mean .. the Methodist are better than the Baptist who are better than the Lutherans who are better than the Catholics who are better than the  Episcopalians and the list goes on. And let’s not forget the denomination of the Non-denomination.

The fact is, “We are all leveled at the foot of the cross.”

Unless we have a Jim Jones thing going on and we see where a person in power is trying to get people to drink poison or a David Koresh where he’s advocating people to be burned alive, or others who are trying to convince us of the date of the end of the world, let’s speak the truth, but in love.

MOST OF US ARE ON THE SAME TEAM. We all have work to do.  Let’s be the light and stop trying to snuff out other kingdom workers’ flame!

  1. Where there is unity there is strength. There is only one SPIRIT.
    Divide and conquer.
Ego / Pride, we need to learn how to honor one another. Because a sister or brother is gifted, talented and anointed in certain areas. There is no reason to be jealous. Instead we need to exercise our gift on their behalf. Remember the same measure that you meet it shall be measured to you again.

We preach unity but we practice separation. You can not control others, but you can practice self control. You begin to practice unity. You begin to reach out to those who are about your Spiritual Fathers Business. Stop thinking about your personal ministry– IT IS MUCH BIGGER THAN THAT. Begin doing to and for others what you want done for and to you. Regardless of what you see or feel, we got to obey the word. Bless those who do not give you the time of day. Go out of your way to connect others to people who will make a difference in their lives.

In the Kingdom of God there are no DENOMINATIONS. Jesus died once and for all. No matter what denomination we are associated with. They all experience the same problems, sickness, financial, marriage, etc. And Jesus is the solution to each and every one of those problems. I try to focus on the solution and not the problem. We need to personally begin to practice what we preach.

What can I DO TO OVERCOME this DENOMINATION DILEMMA. Have I become comfortable within my stagnate little group. On a personal level, it will suck all the life out of you. the kingdom of god is bigger than any denomination.

We have encouraged Women2Women- They both are designed to set an atmosphere that promotes being open and honest with one another. We would like to encourage your GOD GIVEN MANDATE

This was a mind provoking article

  2. Thank you for your remarks. They all supported the point I was trying to make in the article.

  3. How can we get along. We are like sheep without a some one to look out for us. We need to incorporate some very important things in place. Marriage classes / relationships. Economics, classes that teach us how to deal with our money. Third classes that help us discover our gifts / purpose.

How do you expect a group of frustrated people to get along. How would you feel if you was faithful, to a church. Gave 10% of your income or more, and when you have a problem, you can not get the help you need. All we have is a group of people walking around posturing looking important. But miserable, and the question is asked can we just get along. Some feel like using their #7’s other than walking.

  4. Everything starts with Leadership. In the home on the job and especially in church. There are so many different styles of leadership. It can take a minute to find the style that fits your personality. Some times it is through trial and error. But you will know it when you find it. It takes a lot of stress out of the equation.
Leadership plays a very important part in developing UNITY. Look at it from this perspective. The leader is like a led on a pot. The people who are under this leadership / lid can only go as high as the lid goes.

What do the followers do when it is the LEADERSHIP, that is putting out your candle. This is very frustrating to a lot of followers. We are realizing that you can not give what you do not have. You can not take some one were you never been. How can there be unity when you are trying to go forward and some one is holding you back- especially the ones you are trying to encourage, teach, help etc. With no strings attached you are doing it from the depth of your heart.

Sometimes a leader who is not allowed to express their God given MANDATE- or who they are and what they do are not accepted. This is not an easy thing to do. ESPECIALLY when you have invested so much, time, energy and money. It is not easy to move on. But Staying in a STAGNANT environment IS MUCH HARDER.
